about

INFO:
An estranged homage to late 70s NYC anti-culture, realized through the eyes of a Scottish born electronic musician living in modern day Berlin.

The man behind Hot Coins, Danny Berman, is best known by his Red Rack’em moniker. A purveyor of the finest club music from hip hop and soul through to house and techno. A DJ/producer who has progressively climbed electronic music’s precipitous ladder of approval. A vinyl obsessive. A party starter from NG to BK.
Quietly working on Hot Coins for the past four years, this very personal project is sonically inspired by Berman’s love of dance music’s fruitful 78-82 period that embraced the cross pollination of emerging post-punk, disco and electro scenes. Goths and futurists in England danced to Kraftwerk and DAF, New York punks and no-wavers danced to ESG and ‘Planet Rock’. Good times…

…and bad times. Lyrically,The Damage Is Done candidly delves into fear and paranoia motivated by the destructive excesses of modern clubbing. The dark side of the dancefloor, the inevitable comedown and the transcendence that can follow. ‘Foxxy’ encapsulates this, dispelling the myth that clubbing is exclusively reserved for celebration and revising it as a breaking down of pride, a lack of self-belief, a public surrender to humiliation. ‘Confined’ muses on trapped relationships; whether it be personal, professional or with something less animate. First single ‘Geek Emotions’ is a loser’s anthem for the eternal underdog. It means more when a geek wins than when a winner does - but geeks never win. No-one tells that story. However, it is about dancing after all though: ‘Leathered’ is a Warriors inspired homage to the “homo-erotic nature of Italo-disco” and ‘I Ching’ is naturally described as “David Mansuso having tantric sex with himself in a NYC loft” (“Ching “is also slang for cocaine in Scotland). Remarkably, the album ended up being mixed in rural Austria on the world famous ex-Townhouse studios SSL 4000 B series desk which was used to mix Public Image Limited’s ‘Metal Box’ album and ‘In The Air Tonight’ by Phil Collins. This is the desk that the famous ‘gated reverb’ drum sound that defined the 80’s was invented on, so it’s fitting that the album was mixed on it. As several of the tracks feature vocals from City Haze and Berman himself, plus guitar (from Crazy P maestro Chris Todd and Paul ‘Peej’ Murphy) and saxophone (from acclaimed folk saxophonist Pippa Marland), the future lies in the live performance of these tracks.

Track Name: Geek Emotions
(Chorus)
I never get to go to anything
Overlooked and underpaid
On a string
Geek emotions are emotions never felt
By those who chose to win and never had a doubt
I suppose you chose this way at birth
Never questioning your conduct and it’s worth
It’s dysfunctional to care but I do
I need your help
To work out who is who

(Verse 1)
Were the things you said
Just the things you read
If they said you’re dead
Would you believe them
If the news is true
Then why are you
Still here with me
And not with someone else

(Verse 2)
Is the brains the answer
Or to question truth
When there’s no one there
Is it really worth it
Am I a nerd
Or just a kind of king
When there’s no one there
What is the truth?
Track Name: The Only Way
(Verse 1)
They told me it’s the easy way
They told me it’s right way
They told it’s the easy way
They told me it’s the right way

(Verse 2)
They told do it your own way
They told me do it my way
They told me do it your own way
They told me do it my way

(Verse 3)
You told me it’s the only way
You told me do it my way
You told me it’s the only way
You told me do it my way

Spoken Bridge/Chorus

Today we’re gonna do it my way
Just for once
We’re gonna do it my way
And lets see what happens
When you do it my way
Maybe things will be better
That’s for us to find out isn’t it?

My Way
My Way
My Way
Track Name: New Beat
(Verse 1)
When does enough feel enough?
When saying no is so tough
I want to stay out all night
But no one else thinks it’s right

(Verse 2)
I never want to go home
I’m always out on my own
It’s always just one more time
Each time a piece of me dies

(Chorus/Bridge)

Don’t try to tell me it’s the right way
Don’t try it’s the wrong way
Don’t try to tell me it’s the easy way
Is this a place in which I’ve got to stay?
Track Name: Freestyle Lover
(Verse 1)
I’m just a freestyle lover at the end of the day
I’ll be your freestyle lover babe whatever you say
I’m just a freestyle lover at the end of the day
I’ll be your freestyle lover babe whatever you say

(Verse 2)
I’m a freestyle lover.. I’m a freestyle lover
I’m a freestyle lover.. I’m just a freestyle lover
I’ll be your sister and your brother
I’m a freestyle lover
I’ll talk to your daddy and your mother
Cause I’m a freestyle lover
Just a freestyle lover
I’ll love you like no other

(Verse 3/Bridge)

Be the freestyle
I’ll be your freestyle lover
I’ll be your sister and your brother
I’ll be your freestyle lover

I’m just a freestyle lover at the end of the day
I’ll be your freestyle lover babe whatever you say
I’m just a freestyle lover at the end of the day
I’ll be your freestyle lover babe whatever you say
Track Name: Confined
(Verse 1)
I can’t find my way out
So much noise no one can hear you shout
Your love is like a prison for me
Blinded by lights that I cannot see

Easy to get in but there’s no way out
Too much noise no one can hear me shout
Why can’t just be myself and play it cool
Better on my own just myself to rule

(Possible bridge)

Only one way out – you have to build an exit
Only room for one – you have to find your exit
No time for two in life – you’re flying solo now
It’s better on your own – no other mind to keep
Track Name: Foxxy
(Chorus/refrain)
Crash and burn every night
Something just don’t feel right
My friends think I am stupid
They laugh at me all the time

(Verse 1)
I need a bigger brain
I need a better outlook
I need a fitter body
I want a different life
How did I used to feel?
How did I cope with my
Outlook and false perspective
I crashed and burned every night

(Chorus/refrain)
Crash and burn every night
Something just don’t feel right
My friends think I am stupid
I never get things right
Track Name: Blizzard
(Verse 1)
You make me feel so sexy
You make all the people love me
You make music business easy
The bathroom is my favourite place
You stop me getting off my face
A knowing smile for everyone
A bloody nose is everyday
For those who choose to live this way

(Verse 2)
But lately things don’t feel the same
You don’t feel as good as last week
You used to make me feel so sexy
But now you’re just another night
I think I need to get a new girl
Get the excitement back again
I miss those early days of flirting
Oh how much fun we used to have

(Verse 3)
I thought that I didn’t care
I wasn’t able to share
Good friends are hard to find
When you’re completely snowblind

It wasn’t me…it wasn’t fair
Lost in a blizzard out there
Good friends are hard to find
When you’re out of your mind
